Our take

Only get this card if United is your airline. The Club membership alone costs $750+ bought straight from United, so for a hub regular the $695 fee is covered before the bonus even lands — and up to 100,000 miles is the richest public United offer running right now. Fly United twice a year? The Explorer card gives you a free checked bag and two Club passes a year for $0 the first year, then $150.

Who it's for

United loyalists who fly out of Newark, Chicago, Houston, Denver or San Francisco and would otherwise pay for a United Club membership — or anyone chasing Premier status.

How it earns

  • 11x total miles on eligible United flights (card miles plus your MileagePlus member miles)
  • 5x on all other eligible United purchases and prepaid Renowned Hotels and Resorts stays
  • 2x on dining and all other travel
  • 1x on everything else

Perks

  • United Club membership; All Access (Star Alliance lounges + an extra guest) unlocks at Premier Gold status or $50,000 annual spend
  • Free first and second checked bags for you and one companion on the same reservation
  • Premier Access, plus Premier upgrades on award tickets when you hold status
  • 1,500 bonus PQP every year, up to $120 Global Entry / TSA PreCheck / NEXUS credit every 4 years, no foreign transaction fees

How to stack it

  • Time the application with a big planned expense (insurance, tuition, a trip) so the spend requirement is money you'd spend anyway.
  • Shop through a cashback portal and the card's own offers (Chase Offers, Amex Offers, Capital One Offers) while meeting the spend — the bonus stacks on top of normal earning.
  • Set a calendar reminder for the end of the spend window and another before the first annual fee posts.

Common questions

How do I get the full 100,000 miles?

90,000 miles post after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. The last 10,000 come from adding an authorized user in the first 3 months (Chase counts it as a qualifying activity — check the offer terms on Chase's page). Skip the authorized user and you still get 90,000.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Is the $695 fee really worth it?

If you'd buy a United Club membership anyway — it starts at $750 — the fee is already covered, and the free first and second checked bags (up to $440 a roundtrip for two people) and the bonus miles are gravy. If you won't use the lounges, it isn't worth it.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Does Chase's 5/24 rule apply?

Yes. Like other Chase cards, if you've opened 5 or more personal cards from any bank in the last 24 months, expect a denial.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Can I get this bonus again later?

Not while you hold the card, and not if you received the United Club new-cardmember bonus in the past 24 months.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Do United miles expire?

No. MileagePlus miles never expire, and United-operated award flights have no blackout dates.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Is the bonus taxable?

No. Miles earned by meeting a spending requirement are treated as a purchase rebate, not income.
