Our take

The 100k bonus is huge, but the $795 fee is real money and the credits are in halves (January–June, July–December), so do the math on your own travel first. If you'd use the $300 travel credit, at least one hotel credit half and the lounges, it's a clear win in year one. Everyone else: take the Preferred above and upgrade later.

Who it's for

Frequent flyers who book direct, use lounges and will actually spend the hotel and dining credits. If you fly twice a year, get the Preferred.

How it earns

  • 8x on Chase Travel bookings
  • 4x flights and hotels booked directly
  • 3x dining
  • 1x everything else

Perks

  • $300 annual travel credit
  • $500 The Edit hotel credit (two $250 halves) and $300 dining credit (two halves)
  • Priority Pass and Chase Sapphire Lounges
  • Global Entry / TSA PreCheck / NEXUS credit, DashPass, Lyft and Apple credits

How to stack it

  • Time the application with a big planned expense (insurance, tuition, a trip) so the spend requirement is money you'd spend anyway.
  • Shop through a cashback portal and the card's own offers (Chase Offers, Amex Offers, Capital One Offers) while meeting the spend — the bonus stacks on top of normal earning.
  • Set a calendar reminder for the end of the spend window and another before the first annual fee posts.

Common questions

Is the $795 annual fee really worth it?

Only if you'll use the credits: $300 travel, $500 at Chase's The Edit hotels, $300 dining, plus lounge access and other perks. If you travel a few times a year and book through Chase, the credits outrun the fee; if not, the Preferred is the better pick.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Do the credits post right away?

The travel credit applies automatically to travel purchases each cardmember year. Some credits are split into halves per calendar year, so read the current schedule on Chase's page before you plan around them.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Does 5/24 apply?

Yes. Chase applies 5/24 to the Reserve like the rest of its cards.

Answered by StackTheDeal
How long after the spend do the 100,000 points show up?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks after you reach $6,000 in purchases within 3 months.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Can I hold both the Reserve and the Preferred?

No. Chase allows one Sapphire card per person. You'd need to downgrade the one you have first, and you still wouldn't get a second bonus inside 48 months.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Is the bonus taxable?

No. Credit card points earned by spending aren't taxed as income; the IRS treats them as a rebate on purchases.
