J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing: $50 to $1,000 for moving a brokerage or IRA

Up to $1,000J.P. Morgan Self-Directed InvestingEnds Jan 21, 2027

Open a J.P. Morgan investing account and fund it within 45 days — the new money you move in sets the bonus, up to $1,000 at $250,000 or more.

Our take

Free money for moving an index fund you were going to hold anyway — an ACAT transfer doesn't trigger taxes. The tiers reward size, so this is for the $100k+ crowd; under $25k the $50 isn't worth the paperwork. Pairs nicely with the Chase checking bonus for a one-login setup.

What you have to do

  1. Open a brokerage or IRA through the offer page by January 21, 2027
  2. Fund within 45 days with new money, transferred securities or a rollover; bonus is set on day 45
  3. $5,000–$24,999 → $50; $25,000–$99,999 → $150; $100,000–$249,999 → $325; $250,000+ → $1,000
  4. Keep the funds in the account 90 days; bonus paid within 15 days after that

Fees to avoid

No commissions on online stock and ETF trades; no account fee.

Common questions

Does moving an existing brokerage account from Fidelity or Schwab trigger taxes?

No. An in-kind ACAT transfer moves your shares as they are, with no sale, so there's no capital gains event. You just can't sell them until the 90-day hold is over if you want to keep the bonus.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Do I have to keep the money there?

Yes, for 90 days after the bonus is calculated on day 45. Withdraw before then and the bonus is forfeited. After day 135 you're free to move it back.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Can I use an IRA rollover?

Yes. The offer counts a rollover into a J.P. Morgan Self-Directed IRA and transfers of securities, as well as cash. A 401(k) rollover is a common way to hit the $25,000 tier.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Can I get this more than once?

Chase's terms limit the bonus to one per customer and exclude people who received a J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing bonus in the past, and existing JPMorgan Wealth Management customers may be excluded. Check the terms for your situation.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Is the bonus taxable, and on what form?

Yes. For a taxable brokerage account it's reported as interest on a 1099-INT. For an IRA it's deposited into the IRA and isn't currently taxable.

Answered by StackTheDeal
Does the bonus affect my credit or 5/24?

No. There's no credit pull for a brokerage account and it has nothing to do with the Chase 5/24 credit card rule.
